The Hike | Scott Miller

Support Scott and his efforts at National Links Trust’s ‘The Hike at East Potomac’ on Monday, June 9th

I am incredibly fortunate that golf has been a part of my life from a young age. My parents put me in a junior program when I was young enough to walk three holes and I played competitively in high school.

My appreciation for the mission of National Links Trust, “positively impacting the community and changing lives through affordable and accessible municipal golf,” was really formed when I was living in London in 2019 and 2020. There, after my young professional years where golf was infrequent, I met a group of ex-pats and started playing again every weekend. Golf follows a different model in the UK, even the most “private” clubs are accessible for public play and public courses are focused on the two things that matter most: a pure golf experience and a place to enjoy a pint after the round. Many also serve as public parks where locals can get out to enjoy nature or take their dogs on a walkabout. I traveled up to Scotland where accessible golf options accompany many of the world’s top 100 courses – short courses, par 3 courses and putting courses all exist at places like St. Andrews, Carnoustie and North Berwick. These venues provide excellent golf courses that bring in serious golfers from across the world, while also providing affordable and accessible options for all to enjoy.

My return from the UK coincided with National Links Trust’s founding in 2020 and I soon found myself spending weekends looping East Potomac’s blue course and playing the red and white courses with my wife and parents. We now also have two young boys (3yo and 1yo), the older of which loves going to the driving range, playing mini golf, and even getting out for 9 holes in the cart.

I am thrilled to be able to participate in The Hike at East Potomac Golf Links and support the mission of the National Links Trust. This organization has resonated with me since its founding, and I am incredibly excited to support their work in making golf more affordable, accessible and enjoyable for all.
