MORE ABOUT LANGSTON GOLF COURSE

BEHIND THE NAME

John Mercer Langston (1829 – 1897) was an American abolitionist, attorney, educator, activist, diplomat, and politician. An African American, he became the founding dean of the law school at Howard University, the first Black law school in the country. He was also the first president of what is now Virginia State University. 1n 1888, Langston was the first African American elected to the US Congress from Virginia and was the last for another century. Langston Golf Course was eventually named after him.

The celebrated Harlem Renaissance poet, Langston Hughes, memorialized his great uncle’s decades-long fight against racial discrimination when he described John Langston’s actions on discovering a street barrier erected by local whites to prevent him from passing through their section of the capital city. Hughes wrote:

“He got out, took his axe and chopped it down while the coachman held his gloves. From then on, without hindrance, he rode behind his snow- white horses through the streets of Washington – the ebony spokes of his highly lacquered carriage wheels gleaming.”
